Updated: Apr 28
There is magic in the air during the holidays. The festivities warm everyone’s heart. However this time of year there is also an increase of fires and electrical shortages. According to the USCPSC there were 15,000 injuries related to holiday decorations in 2012. We at Global Home Protection want you to have a merry Christmas and a safe new year. Here’s 5 tips to keep your family safe while decorating for the holidays.
1. Maintain your tree
Authentic trees have a great aesthetic. Thousands of visitors go to Rockefeller center every year to the Christmas tree. Authentic trees require a certain level of care compared to synthetic trees.
Place your tree far from any heat source. Make sure there is a fire extinguisher nearby. Trees are flammable especially when dried out. If you plan to have an authentic tree then make sure it watered everyday.
2. Don’t burn wrapping paper in the fireplace
Wrapping paper should be recycled not burned. Burning wrapping paper can be a fire hazard.
3. Check your lights for safety
Replace any lights with damaged wires, broken sockets, and loose connections.
The chance of electric shock on a metal ladder is high. Prevent electrocution by installing Christmas lights on a dry wooden ladder.
5. Keep your eyes on the stove
The holidays is a time for large family feasts. Do not leave a stove unattended. If you have something else to attend to, turn off the stove or find someone to look after the stove. One of the major causes of home fires is unattended cooking.
